The visit of G.P. Taylor
Renowned author G.P. Taylor visited the Open Learning Centre on October 14th. He entertained students from years 7 and 8 by talking about his experiences at school and as a vicar. He held everyone spell bound with his ghost stories centred in the town of Whitby. Both staff and students jumped up in fright when he lifted the lid off the “haunted box”.
The students queued to buy copies of “The Vampyre Labyrinth”, which G.P. Taylor duly signed. He also posed for photographs.
Everyone in the Open Learning Centre is hoping that G. P. Taylor will return for another visit.
Reading Club Visit Newcastle City Library
Members of the year 7/8 Reading club visited the Newcastle City Library during the last week of the autumn term. They enjoyed looking at books and made suggestions about the layout of our own library. After a McDonald’s lunch and a chance to admire Fenwick’s window the students made their way to Waterstone’s book shop. We had made a prior arrangement with the staff who had provided a trolley in readiness for our arrival. The students then moved into action choosing stock that would be appropriate for our own shelves. We were impressed by their choices which did not only reflect their own tastes but took into account titles and subjects that they knew would be popular with students throughout the school. They also proved excellent bargain hunters looking out for offers and the buy one get one free choices. We are all looking forward to the next opportunity for a day out in Newcastle.
During the summer term the OLC staff and students have joined in the fundraising for Colin’s Corner with the sale of refreshments and a summer rffle. Events planned for the autumn term include a heritage coffee morning on September 8th, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on September 30th and the commemoration of Remembrance in November. Thank you to all staff, students and members of the community for their continuing support of our activities.
