Cookathon Regional Winners

The Blyth School Community College named Regional Winner in National Cookathon

Young cooks from The Blyth School Community College, who competed against an estimated 24,000 people across the country in Let’s Get Cooking’s national cookathon competition, have been named North East regional winners.

The Blyth School Community College’s Let’s Get Cooking club had more than 400 people cooking Cottage Pie at their cookathon event on 17 March 2009, beating other entries from around the North East region, and enjoy a £250 cash prize.

Let’s Get Cooking is a national network of school-based cookery clubs backed by £20 million from the Big Lottery Fund. Let’s Get Cooking launched this unprecedented challenge to rally as many people as possible to cook a healthy dish together and to show just what fun cooking can be for everyone. Clubs were judged on how many people they involved in helping prepare and cook healthy food on the same day.

The Club Coordinator Mrs Fitzsimmons said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won regional top place in the cookathon. It was hard work but fantastic fun. We just can’t seem to get enough of cooking and, when we do, it tends to go way beyond club members to families and many others from our local community. We couldn’t have become regional winners without the help of everyone at school and those who cooked at home, so we owe a big thank you to every pupil, parent, teacher and helper who took part.”

Awarding the cash prize and congratulating the club, Let’s Get Cooking Regional Club Coordinator Helen Rowland said: “Selecting winners was really tough as the excitement, creativity and enthusiasm of clubs meant entries to our cookathon were amazing. This competition has not only been great fun for everyone involved, it has also given thousands of people the chance to practise and develop their skills in healthy cooking, which is what Let’s Get Cooking is all about. Well done The Blyth School Community College!”
