Key Stage 4  Mentoring
The Learning Mentor covers a wide range of areas working with students in Year 10 and 11, the key stage 4 mentor specifically focuses on the academic side of the students workload in there build up the GCSE studies. Mentoring takes place on an on-to-one basis and also in small groups, offering support in a variety of subject areas.  The Mentor works closely with a number of people such as heads of year, subject leaders, subject teachers, learning support, connections and youth workers to ensure effective mentoring and support for each student.

Other than focussing on the academic side of the studies, the mentor will help support students throughout college in any way they can to achieve then school and career aim.

LEE SAVORY KS4 Learning Mentor

Since starting the role of a Learning Mentor in September 2005 I have worked with a vast amount of students seeing them develop and progress through school and in into employment, university, further education and modern apprenticeships. Supporting them to achieve there aim is very satisfying and shows when students have a goal to aim towards they can achieve it with hard work, support and guidance.

I love working at The Blyth School with a variety of students with different needs and challenges, this helps myself keep a broad knowledge of what’s going on in the educational setting to help support the students the best way I can. The role can be challenging yet very rewarding.

Mentoring can be a diverse role with the many different students and the nature of there specific needs.  Along with mentoring I manage the Sixth Form football team who compete in the Northumberland Schools football league, in the first season we just missed on promotion to the 1st division, so hopefully this season we can go one better.

I also work closely with Adventure North East who work with groups of students completed team building activities such as bushcraft, mountain biking, rock climbing, raft building, mine exploration, gorge descents and ghyll scrambling. The groups get the chance to complete all these activities whilst doing written work linked to the course and receive Wider Key Skills Level 2, this is equivalent to 2 B’s at GCSE level. The course is a great experience and helps develop student’s team building skills and enhance there all round confidence and ability.
