Maths

In the mathematics department we are focused on providing a secure learning environment for all students and are steadfast in our aim that every student will leave with a qualification in mathematics. We are a forward thinking department and are continually looking for ways to improve teaching and learning. In 2008 we were described by Ofsted as using a range of interesting and challenging activities to support learning and that the impact of this work is now seen in mathematics where modular examination results for students in Years 10 and 11 show a significant improvement. This improvement continued in 2009.

Students are given a rich and challenging curriculum, following our Key Stage Three curriculum when they enter the school and progressing to the AQA GCSE Modular Maths Syllabus in year nine and continuing through Key Stage Four. The opportunity exists to progress further and study AQA A/AS Level Mathematics at post sixteen with the choice of Mechanics, Statistics or Decision Maths as their applied option. Courses are continually sought so that there is a wide variety available to suit students’ needs; current examples are entry level maths in year 11 and the possibility of Further Mathematics in year 12 to complement A Level studies for those that have shown high ability and a gift for the subject.

It is important that students are fully prepared for their lessons. All students must have their own scientific calculator, pen, pencil and ruler.

Information for Year 7 and 8
Students are studying the KS3 framework in years 7 and 8 ready to begin their GCSE course in year 9. They study the three main strands - Number and Algebra, Shape, Space and Measures and Handling Data as well as Using and Applying Mathematics. Student progress is assessed continuously throughout the year using teacher assessment via a process called Assessing Pupil Progress (APP). This allows us to judge student levels and current achievement rather than using SATs or similar testing.
