The Curriculum Support Department
The Curriculum Support Department Work Room and Pastoral Room are on the lower floor of the North Corridor of the College. It is from this base that the lively and enthusiastic staff provides the College’s Curriculum Support.

The Department works as an integral part of the College working with students and teachers to ensure that students have an equal opportunity to succeed. We work closely with three distinct groups of students, those with specific learning difficulties, attendance issues and behavioural difficulties and partially with the gifted and talented.

Teaching Assistants
The Teaching Assistants work within classrooms supporting the students in their work and behaviour. They also work on an individual and small group basis within the Work Room and Pastoral Room. The TAs bring with them a vast life experience and character. Within the group there is always someone that a young person can relate to in order to form a good working relationship. The assistants also organise a Curriculum Development Club during morning tutor period.

Who we support; We support students across the College in all subject areas and in all abilities. We support within the classroom to give the specialist teacher time with students that require more assistance from them. We also support by making available extra time for certain subject areas during unstructured time and at the end of the College day. We can provide the students with coping strategies to enable them to access the curriculum more easily and think about approaching problems in a different way.

Accreditation and how we celebrate success
In addition to supporting in GCSE classes the Curriculum Support Department also offer accreditation through the Northumberland Unit of Accreditation Scheme. Work that is completed within the department often forms part of a qualification through this scheme. One of the most successful options in this scheme has been Peer Mentoring. Within this programme students will work closely with other younger students assisting them in some aspect of their College life. They will receive training, develop action plans, prepare and manage time effectively. Reviewing become a natural part of the process
